Busting the Myth: Are Metal Roofs Hot in Summer?

Updated: Sep 29, 2021

There are many misconceptions floating around about metal roofing. Some are adamant that it makes a racket when it rains (it doesn’t, unless your roof has exposed rafters and no insulation). Others say having it installed makes your home look like a barn (it won’t because metal roofing is now as versatile as asphalt shingles). Some even say that metal roofing becomes too hot in summer - but this is yet another myth we can easily debunk.

Busting the Myth: Are Metal Roofs Hot in Summer?

The Hot Metal Roofing Myth Any metal exposed to sunlight, or any heat source, for an extended period becomes warm (or even too hot) to the touch. At some point, every one of us must have accidentally come into contact with a metal pan on the hot stove, or the sides of the toaster or an iron plate. Since metal roofing is made of...well, metal...it should make sense that it will retain a considerable amount of heat due to its constant exposure to summer heat. But that’s not exactly the case. Metal Roofing Is Actually Non-Absorptive If you’re planning a roof replacement project this season, you should consider switching to a metal roof. Aside from providing your home with tough weather performance and a sleek look, your new metal roof will also help keep it naturally cooler and more comfortable during the summer. That’s because compared to other roofing options, metal roofing doesn’t absorb heat. It has low thermal mass and comes with inherent reflective properties that send radiant heat back to its source. Its reflective action is also the reason metal roofing is highly recommended in hot climate areas like California. When temperatures drop outside, the metal roofing cools down as well. Because of this fact, you won't have to worry about the material diffusing heat right into your home and causing your air conditioning to work overtime. Add its Class A fire resistance rating, and you’ll find that metal roofing is one of the best choices for your home.
